New ASTM Standard and UL Systems address intersection between fire rated assembly and non-rated assembly
ASTM released Standard Test Method E2837 for Determining the Fire Resistance of Continuity Head-of-Wall Joint Systems Installed Between Rated Wall Assemblies and Nonrated Horizontal Assemblies at the end of 2011. As such, this method is not referenced in the 2006, 2009 or 2012 IBC, as all of them were all developed prior to the introduction of this standard. This unique test method was established so appropriate solutions can be tested and listed to allow selection and installation of joint details that have the same fire resistance rating as the rated wall assembly.
Prior to the release of this new ASTM test method, the fire resistive joint details for this application were addressed primarily through an Engineering Judgment.
Underwriters Laboratories has created a new category (XHBO) to cover systems tested to ASTM E2837. These Continuity Head-of-wall Joint Systems have been given the CJ-D and CJ-S nomenclature (Continuity Joint – Dynamic and Continuity Joint – Static).
Hilti has four (4) new UL joint systems tested in accordance to ASTM E2837. Currently, Hilti is the only manufacturer with a tested system for bare metal roof deck.
