Is UL 1479 equivalent to ASTM E-814?
Yes, UL 1479 is equivalent to ASTM E-814. Both test standards were written for testing of through-penetration firestops.

Why are firestop systems subjected to a hose stream after the fire exposure test is done?
Many people believe that the hose stream part of the test is done to represent what would happen if the fire department were to hit the firestop system while trying to extinguish the fire. However, this was not the intent of the hose stream. This part of the test is done to test the structural integrity of the firestop system after its exposure to heat and determine how well it will work when pressure builds up in a room that contains fire.  

Are there any requirements for "rigidly supporting" pipes through an opening?
UL addresses this on page 1766 of the 2005 Fire Resistance Directory, Volume 2A. It states "Where the individual specifies the penetrating item is to be rigidly supported on both sides of wall or floor, the support system should be designed based upon the premise the firestop system provides no support."  

Are Hilti firestop products ASTM E-814 approved?
All of the Hilti firestopping products that are approved for firestopping through-penetrations have been tested in accordance with ASTM E-814 (UL 1479). These tested and listed systems can be found in our Firestop Manual or in the UL Fire Resistance Directory, Volume II.  

Is FS-ONE strong enough to collapse PVC pipe at full strength?
No, FS-ONE will not collapse PVC until the pipe reaches temperatures at which it will begin to soften or weaken. FS-ONE expands in the direction of least resistance, which is usually outwards toward the opening. However, when a pipe begins to soften during a fire, FS-ONE expands with enough pressure to close the pipe down.  

Do Hilti firestop products contain asbestos?
No, Hilti firestop products do not contain asbestos. 

Are FS-ONE and FS-657 Fire Block non-toxic?
FS-ONE and FS-657 Fire Block are not toxic per the OSHA definition found in 29 CFR 1910.1200, Appendix A. These products will generate smoke during fire conditions. This smoke would probably be toxic, as would the smoke generated by other building materials and furnishings in the structure. Given the amount of carpet, upholstery, plastics, etc. in a structure versus the amount of firestop, the risk from the smoke generated by the firestop should be minimal.

Are Hilti firestop products UL approved?
Yes, all of Hilti firestop products are UL approved.
